Things wear out (according to MS and others)
Well,
I understand that that if the underlying operating system changes under your tools, then it may not run correctly.
I work in a company that produces safety critical software. This has been our bugbear. If you use a safety validated compiler for OSxxxxx then it have to change your OS due to being forced to by hardware, that presents enormous problems for some of us.
Our latest problem is caused by a tool-set that uses a dongle that has recently failed. We are unable to obtain a replacement dongle. The suppliers saying we must buy their latest product. Well that's easy for them to say. However, that would also require a redesign and re-validation of the embedded system that the final product uses. Why? you ask. Well the new features and bloat provided by the new "improved" tool cause the existing embedded system to fail its safety checks because of less effecient code.
