Fact is not on the agenda. Microsoft have 'won' the desktop OS and office suite markets, that's it. Everything else they have tried has either failed or cost them a zillon bucks to buy marketshare.

I don't fear Microsoft, they are are as big as they will ever get and will turn into a kind of second-string IBM. The have no idea what the 'next big thing' is, they completely missed the handheld boom, mobile phones and MP3 players. They jumped into the game console market and have paid dearly for their second place (out of 3), but there is little growth there. They also utterly ignored the ring-tone business which is bigger even than games and consoles. When something comes along that replaces the home PC that will be the end of MS as we know it (Apple will still be there with 5% marketshare but only for as long as Jobs stays in charge).

Sure, MS will remain a huge company and continue with massive profits for a long time (just like IBM does), but they will fade form general consciousness to be important only to business.

And the analogy with IBM is complete.
