"laying off a few thousand more people whose jobs have been made redundant by the freebies."

Just like Netscape having to lay off thousands of employees (around 2,500 eventually) when Microsoft started giving away Internet Explorer? Or like several small upstart multimedia player publishers losing the ranch when Microsoft started bundling a free media player with Windows? Yep, that damnable freebie GPL stuff is bad for the developer community. And apparently, so is Microsoft. You'll not get any sympathy for your flimsy argument here.
