"The problem is, lately it seems like EVERY (and I mean EVERY) hit that shows up is a commercial link."

Personally I think the reverse, they put in a better language parser in November, it delivers a tighter set of results.

With the new algo things work differently:

Do a search "bracelets" notice you get a set of generic sites about bracelets, news sites about bracelets, but not much bracelet selling. Now search "buy bracelets", notice you get sites that want to sell you bracelets.

With the new algo, you start searching with say a two word phrase, and if you don't find what you want, add another on target word and now the result set is focussed on the 3 word phrase. You add words till you find what you want.

Before you would start with a long phrase, then add negative words to filter the spam till you found what you wanted.

It also killed a lot of spam but I think that was just a side effect. For example, this site was top for the terms "bracelets", for "necklaces" and for "earrings" a year ago:

http://www.bracelets-necklaces-earrings.com/

Here's an extract:
"Bold and Beautiful are the buzzwords in bracelets, necklaces and earrings jewelry! Welcome to bracelets necklaces earrings, and sterling silver jewelry! At bracelets, necklaces and earrings jewelry..."

Its not a major jewellery site, they just carefully chose the site name so they could put those 3 words in extreme high density on the page and also so that every link to the page had those 3 words in.

Now its nowhere, but it was a very artificial site.
