Word of Mouth
Yes, Linux has had pretty good "word of mouth" but it has mainly been amoung the geeks. The average user who tried it usually ended up giving up on it as too hard and telling all their friends not to bother and one bad "word of mouth" beats 20 good ones.

Now I admit I haven't tried Linux for a while but if a somewhat geek like myself had problems making it work (and I have been around computers either as a user or hardware maintenance since the early 80's) then the user who just wants to check e-mail, brouse the web and maybe write a report or letter was not and is not going to even try to make it work. Now I have heard that the installation has gotten easier but has the main problems of getting files, loading software and connecting your machine to the internet gotten any easier? I hope so if OSS wants people to use Linux. Firefox is a good example of OSS done right. Easy to download, easy to install and if all you want to do is brouse the web, you don't have to do anything else (their way of getting updates could be better though.)
