Just a buildup of impressions from numerous hours over coffee, lunch and/or beers with the likes of Steve Kunin, John Doll, Joe Rolla (Steve is or was Assistant Commissioner for Patent Policy, John and Joe were Technology Center Directors, but I think they've moved to the top of the hierarchy). Interestingly, several years ago while the IBM site was the only full patent search site, I came across a patent for a very common, very old concept in databases. Took to Joe's office. He looked at the supervisory examiner's signature, said no wonder. Don't worry about it, the company likely won't pay the renewal fee. Management is completely blase about a situation over which it has no control.
I don't think Lehman and company are apocalyptic about the prospects of an attack (Bruce, anyway, he's paid by the clock), and admittedly, the subject can meet the toll. Still it doesn't want to and has hired some top guns to devise a defense strategy.
