'Market share'
Articles in ZDNet often have trouble with numbers and the concepts behind them. But in this case market share is reasonable to measure. A company makes its money this year off machines sold and not users continuing from prior years.

As far as the 'installed base' is concerned, the closest to good numbers we have are the results from sites that tabulate the operating systems and/or browsers used to access them. Of course, even those numbers are problematic because of multiple visits (which may be variable by different types of users, and users of some varieties of software may tend to visit disproportionately often), intentional masking by the software, the fact that not all computers connect to the internet, and the possibility that owners of multiple computers and users of multiple types of software may use only one of their hardware/software configurations to access the web.
Even with these caveats, we should learn more about Apple usage when Safari is widespread among the installed base.
