IDC's False Use of Market Share
IDC cannot quote Market Share. Market Share relates to the number of users of a particlar type of machine. Their 'Market Share' is actually percentage of overall sales. These are two distinctly different things. Overall sales does not take into account people who buy new Macs at a rate of once every 4-6 years (or more), while Wintel customers buy at a rate of once every 2-3 years. Thus, in terms of actual installed base (or TRUE Market Share), the percentage of users of Mac OS is a lot higher than the less than 2% they quote. It is actually closer to 5-8%. Still quite small, but nowhere close to their claim.
