RE: Re: Oracle belongs on Solaris, not linux.
I am an Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL admin since '99, a Certified Oracle 8 & 8i DBA. I've been a *N*X Admin (HP-UX, AIX, SCO, and Linux) since '87, a Brainbench certified shell scripter (whoopee).

SQL Server is for small to medium projects requiring little to no security. It's ok for non high availability projects for which you can reboot the server at least nightly. You are stuck on Windows.

MySQL is great for small, medium, or large projects requiring no security other than that provided by the OS and no partitioning, Stored Procedures, triggers, etc. The latter 2 have been added recently but those features are not yet sufficiently stable. You can run on many OSes.

Oracle is great for small to VERY Large projects requiring high security, high concurrency, and Clustering OR for embedding into any of our products which we sell to our customers. In that case, with 20 or fewer users, the price for Embedded Oracle Database (Standard Edition One) is a fraction of SQL Server and less than MySQL. Now, before you yak about it being free, check the MySQL licensing, guys. You can run Oracle on nearly every OS out there, from Win95 to Solaris, to VMS, to OS390, and everything in between.

Solaris is nice, however it lacks anything other than command line admin utilities. It takes far more work to generate a quick picture of how the system as a whole is functioning than HP's Glance.

Linux (my favorite being Centos 64-bit) is fast, friendly, and easier to administer than Solaris.

The best things about *N*X are
1) CRON
2) Shell scripting
3) Stability

My 2 favorite things about AIX:
1) The ability to (w/o purchasing add'l software) expand a Filesystem on the fly. I did that in the mid-90s on AIX 3.2.5 and found it to be the greatest thing in the world.
2) Stability. It almost never pooped on me.
