I'v seen AIX 5.2 crash a few times due to JFS2 bugs
fixed now (thankfully). Other reasons, corrupted JFS and mo fsck at boot.

We are however very heavy users of AIX for HPC apps: jobs run for days, they use up several GB of main mem and 100s of GBs of file system.

Ignoring its quirky nature, AIX is decently stable. Incidentally, IBM heavy metal h/w IS solid. NO repairs since 1992 except for a noisy fan.

As a matter of fact: IRIX 6.5.x is more mature and much less quirky, so is Solaris 8+.

Surprisingly stable and efficient is Linux 2.4 on SGI h/w (Altix 3700). It crashed a few times due to failing h/w parts. It is decently stable otherwise.
