Linux and Microsoft

Oh, I don't know. I run two very different types of businesses in my office and use both Windows and Linux here.

Both have their advantages; they are tools.

I've learned from my use of linux; I'm not a programmer in the real sense of the word -- stumble my way through building systems when I need one -- my networking skills are good enough to get the job done but I'm no expert. I tell people that I'm an 'advanced novice' with 20 years' experience. (g) Started in MSDOS and didn't move to Windows 3.11 until 1995 because some of my necessary proprietary business applications required doing so. At first getting away from the command line seemed like a lot more trouble for very little benefit and I didn't like it. Of course I've forgotten a lot of the command line stuff (which isn't quite as easy to get to now as before) and am only now getting even a little familiar with the linux command line stuff (been using linux not quite a year now).

Frankly, I see weaknesses and strengths in BOTH OS's and the programs they run. Some things in both Windows and Linux are just plain flaky... and as someone else wrote: Linux advocates would do well to remember that most new linux users probably are more familiar with the "windows way" of doing things; it's not helpful to bash them.

In the same way, I find it offensive that some on this forum (I lurk, mostly) seem to get their jollies using crude language to describe linux and those that would advance its development and use. I dont' hate Microsoft, or Linux. Both have their place, and their advantages.

My two cents: advocate good ideas, but leave the crude language alone. Use the English language to express your ideas with elegance, lest we think you are not able to do so.

I now return to my 'lurking' position.
