Most Joe 6 Packs that I know delight in
downloading software, freeware, shareware and
doing a 1 or 2 click install. In Linux, most
software which is not distribution specific
requires a little more effort and knowledge than
that. Couple this with the fact that the web
browsers which come with just about every distro
do not have java, for example, included. That
has to be downloaded from one of several vendors,
Sun, IBM, Blackdown and unpacked and installed
from the CLI. From there it depends on which
browser you are using as to what the next step
should be. None of the Linux distros have
addressed this kind problem, and will not be able
to until some kind of nearly universal standard
is adopted. Sorry, but I don't see little old
blue haired ladies or your average Joe 6 Pack
being up to this.
