"don't mind a fairly steep learning curve (once you depart from the GUI)"

How many *average* users depart from the GUI?
I always wondered what would happen if I switched my 65 y/o Mom over to Mandrake (or such), and just told her it's the next version of Windows?
"Word is called 'Writer' now Mom."

Regarding the post about <1%:
"Indeed, from 2003 to 2004, Linux server sales grew 44 percent to $4.25 billion, out of an overall market of $46.2 billion, IDC analyst Jean Bozman said. By 2009, Linux server revenue should reach $9.3 billion, out of $60.8 billion in total."
That's 9 to 15 percent of servers, at least.
Desktop deployment is estimated around 3-5% based upon purchases, downloads, reported burned copies, and reported network installs.
