Linux is a movement as much as an OS
The shift towards Linux is representative of a wider move towards collaborative systems. The cost of a pwerful processor (manufacturing cost) continues to tumble and the knock effect of this will be more and more CPU enabled devices. The desk top PC is a dinosaur. I for one have always doubted that there would ever come a time when the whole family clustered around the PC to watch a DVD - the perfect DVD player is not also a word processor, emailer and (in the case of Windows PCs) a virus propagator. The future will belong to cheap, dedicated hardware devices, and the OS of choice will be a subset of the Linux anyone can currently own. The question of ownership is important. Users of today might be happy to have Microsoft own their PC - and Microsoft do own their PCs, since the Windows OS making the hardware useable can only ever be licensed from MS, not boght and owned. The notion that Microsoft would own a user's DVD player or camera, on the basis that the Windows OS licensed from Microsoft installed on it was the software component to make it work, will not be tolerated. When Joe Bloggs buys a DVD player, they want to own it. With Linux as the OS in the embedded device, they will be able to. With Windows CE or one of its variants installed, they cannot. Hence the growth of showcases like LinuxWorld. Go Penguins, Go!
