Better to recommend good source material
Though the relational model is simple to understand (and certainly simpler than any of the things that superceded or have attempted to supplant it) it still needs some study to appreciate it properly.

This is why I hesitate to give a short explanation.

The other problem is that if you have contact with contemporary products you get a very distorted view of what the relational model is as the products (and SQL in particular) have implemented it in such a compromised way.

My position is, learning the products won't teach you about the relational model. Knowing the model will help you to work more effectively with the products and will also put you in a strong position to evaluate products from a knowledgable and critical stance.
