A book you could read
Chris Date's "Introduction to Database Systems".

Apparently there is more concise (and more practitioner orientated) book from the same author out recently "Database in Depth" (O'Reilly press). I haven't read it yet myself but if it from Date it is almost certainly very good.

I have read "Introduction to Database Systems" and can thoroughly recommend it.

Be prepared to realise how little you know about Relational Database Management Systems (even if, like me, you had been using SQL DBMSs for years).
