Spend money to make money
Even thieves spend money to steal money, for a caper can require skill, tools, supplies, lots of time and even for-hire help. Thus, corporations seldom look for free (no cost) goods or service, rather they want reliable though costly supply and materials. This common corporate trait appears to pose no foreseeable threat to the existence of free (open) software development, even if it has to move overseas, any more than religious tithe-collecting could cancel the grace of God.
