Why is Windows crashing?

Truth be known, I am working hard on Novell OES, and that I was able to get a Windows system up to par in far less time, but I can't leave that Windows system running unattended, (Crashes often)

What's happening?

I'm sure you don't ordinarily leave software functioning that poorly. Seems this is only part of the story.

On your main point, yes Linux became an alternative in situations in which expensive Unix was being eliminated, and Microsoft could have been successful as a cheap replacement.
Given that Unix experts are often not fond of Microsoft products and the smaller difference between Unix and Linux than between Unix and Windows, that's not surprising.

But I think you're also acknowledging that Windows is often easier to install, and probably to maintain, if I'm understanding your use of "sloppy" correctly.
For some people, those are significant advantages.
