Interesting discussion!
Agree with 'Loverock' that the 'free labor' angle can make Novell's and Red Hat's opening-up efforts seem less attractive to Open Source purists (of which I am one, even before Mitch Kapor's epiphany). As such, their opening-up seem more geared toward future profits (i.e. market share) than reaping the potentially great benefits of getting 'outside help from a diffrerent perspective.' Also, what about the considerable [non-hobbyist] talent already commited to other Open Source projects like Mozilla's? There is only a finite amount of that talent out there and the time available to anyone willing to contribute anything substantial. Finally, and I.M.H.O. only, if two OS's are equally stable and robust, it is not so much price or TCO that will drive the decision to select one over the other, but the control afforded IT by the OS in terms of tuning, customizing, extending, scaling, and supporting it.
Can someone please explain to me what the "slashdot bubble" is? TIA.
