... this strategy is probably not the way they will do it. As you say, Linux opposes Unixes successfully, not Microsoft products.
I think a major problem is the loss of the old employment agreement, in which people take care of the company, and the company takes care of its people. Even saying it sounds antique.
You, too, have probably known people whose strongest reaction to a layoff or, emotionally worse, a forced, inadequate retirement is the disillusion they feel after a long period of intense loyalty, identifying with the company.
