Well, yes.
As you say, the goal is to increase the stock price by decreasing the company's ability to be competitive in the future.

This makes Wall Street happy, as well as those executives whose bonuses are based on profits or stock price, and who don't expect to be around for the collapse unless the retention bonus dwarfs the signing bonus elsewhere.

On the Linux issue, it is failing for Novell. It is not doing its job of preserving what's left of Netware from Microsoft.

But Linux can be the main business of a profitable company. A small company, slightly profitable.
