Of course your MS rep said Lotus is dead.

From the sound of things.. both you and the company you work for are brain-dead.
The company you work for was idiotic for putting ANYTHING in place that would leave them without hardware.

On the other hand... using Microsoft software may bring excitement.. but it doesn't bring scalability.. and the excitement (virii, worms, trojans, system crashes) are *NOT* the type you want to see in an enterprise situation.
The Lotus Notes client used ONLY as an e-mail platform would save your company a crapload of money in cleanup expenses for virii & worms alone. They're not automatically executed in Notes.. they are in pretty much every MS product that is capable of transporting data via TCP/IP.
I've been using the Notes client as an e-mail software for about 8 years now, and in that time I have never ONCE had my machine infected with a virus, trojan or worm. They've shown up in my e-mail database..but they have no effect.
That *ALONE* should be enough to cause every large corporation in the country to immunize their infrastructure against the possibility that some morons might run Exchange/Outlook/Outlook Express by using Active Directory (A Microsoft technology based on LDAP) to cause those programs to be automatically un-installed every time someone starts a computer.
The only reason that doesn't happen is that IT managers have become stupid enough to think that saving the money on a license for a good product by using the "free" software that comes with Windows, is a good idea.
You get what you pay for in this regard!
