Isn't American English an ever changing language?
I remember a lot of words that at one time considered NOT to be
words...now they are in the dictionary.

I've also seen certain "rules" change over the years....

So I tend to think that "IF" we the people use something long
enough or break a rule in the same fashion for X amount of time
it will in fact nulify the "old" rule or become a rule in and of
itself.
