Actually, SCO got what it paid for...
There is a "business" reason the Copyrights were not transfered, as well as Novell getting 95% from royalties. SCO couldn't afford the asking price. So they settled to have the rights to use UNIX and sell licneses, but they never actually got any patents from the deal. They couldn't afford it.

SCO is simply an agent for collecting for Novell. They get what ammounts to a "handling fee" of 5%. Novell gets the remaining 95%.

I believe the "now named SCOGroup" wanted this. They were Caldera and needed a boast because of lagging revenue. This allowed them to make "Caldera" Linux 'main stream' because they could use the UNIX tag line along with the Calder name (implying UNIX backing). Of course, they probably relized this would be difficult without actually adding UNIX code (which was also risky becuse of the license). They also hoped to reap some benifets from UNIX and be able to solidify UnixWare as a viable UNIX edition (which is lacked certain enterprise functionality at the time).
