Not so sure that had anything to do with it
I don't think the Anti Trust law suit had anything to do with it. It was a pointless exercise in terms of this.

Linux would still be where it is today without the anti-trust lawsuit. What illegal activities could MS have done against Linux to put Linux out of business? I'm sure they could have done something but really MS underestimated Linux in the past just in the same manner that Billy Gates underestimated the Internet.

I believe a change is occuring today. The power once held by the software vendor is moving on to the hard vendors again. Software today such as Windows on the desktop in particular has reached it's maximum potential. If you look at what you do on PC today and compare it to what you did even 10 years ago nothing has changed task wise. You can do it easier today and it looks less itimidating. Like connecting to the internet or viewing a video clip. I remember doing that with Windows NT 4.0 when it first came out back almost 10 years ago. There really is only so much polishing you can do to an OS and people are polishing Linux right now too. OS software is becoming a comodity product. Hardware is what makes everything possible.

With Microsoft having 50 Billion in the bank though they can buy up the next big thing in the business. I wonder what that will be? In this way MS can just keep thier gloves on.
