Squirm? This is an easy one..
SFU is better than the average M$ product because M$ wants to be sure that there are no problems (or as little as possible) with the migration. If unix guys had the same trouble that NT admins have with their networks on a day to day basis, they would give up, remembering how nice it was not to have to deal with petty crap, and also that the machine is supposed to be working for you and not the other way around.
M$ can get away with making their regular stuff such crap because you've already bought it and they've made the sale. There's no motivation to make it good quality. With SFU, this is the first piece of software that a unix admin will be working with (going to Windows) so M$ wants to make sure that it is a gracious greeting.
M$ probably just gave up and ponied up some cash so they could "win" the award..
