I have been maintaining RH 9 systems for the last two months now. When you install automatically the updates (over the RH network) you don't have to REBOOT unless the kernel has modifications.

MOST of the updates I've seen so far are on applications.

Unfortunately, MS users cannot enjoy the benefit of modifying applicatios on the fly, without a reboot since the appl.code is intertwined with the pure kernel code. THIS requires reboot.

We have rebooted our Linux machines only ONCE since June. How many times did you patch and reboot your MS PCs this month? Don't assume that because MS s/w requires reboots every other day this is an inherent property of the system. UNIX and increasngly Linux users know this since several years ago.

If one includes the DISRRUPTIVE patching procedure that takes place 1-2 times a week per PC PLUS all the licensing fees + s/w cost, how can you say the cost is comparable? Let alone the potential destruction of data/machines a truly mallevolent virus can inflict to massive scales....
