Depends

for RH enterprise linux workstation or server you must pay for every computer it is on but you get support.

179 for workstation isn't bad especially if you need support

but 2000 something for the servers is very pricy windows server 2003 Enterprise ed is like @ the most $1300 but keep in mind every case you call MS about is 250 bucks, but so far the support is excellent.

They do have a less tested, constatly changing version that you can still download for free but you still have to pay for support.

This doesn't really have much to do with greed, companies need to make money. Get used to it, RH and all OSS companies need to start making money so they can attract more developers etc, they have to prove the OSS model can be profitable.

Don't worry i am sure the greed will come later, once people have standardized on RH, or suse or whoever is on top of the linux distro camp in 7 years.
