Java is still the most popular language
I disagree with your assumption that Java is a niche market. The number of Job Openings in the US is something around 14,000 compared to 2,000 for C#.

I do agree with you estimation of the GUI. They made a huge mistake in not making Swing Thread-Safe. One could argue that other GUI's (SWT, for example) are also not thread-safe, but when I compare Java/Swing with C++/GTK, I find it much easier to develop production apps with GTK. It gives me more control and works more reliably (IMHO). Java/Swing has made great strides since 1.2 or even since 1.4. In fact, 1.6 is excellent. But, at the end of the day, I need to write production quality applications that work 100% of the time. Since most production applications involve some background processes or long running processed which need to update the GUI, it gets pretty tedious wrapping every call to Swing inside a Runnable. But, this is what happens when people with no production experience develop a system for production use. I guess it goes back to the colleges for not hiring IT professors with real-life experience.

The best case in point - JProgressBar or ProgessMonitor. These are, unbelievably, NOT thread safe. These, by definition are called by another thread. Come on, Sun, get real.
