Novell has to take this approach if they intend to succeed with Suse. They cannot afford to wait on the fence and lose customers that are not convinced they are not going to court. You see, SCO knows it is cheaper to pay them than to fight in court with expensive lawyers. This is just standard business thinking and more than likely the only reason anyone has paid them anything. Whether SCO wins or loses is not an issue at this point in the game; only that dollars come in to their coffers. And it is this point that I take exception to. I believe others are of the same opinion.

Why should I worry about some guy that ?claims? to have a gun in his pocket and is threatening me if I don?t cough up money to him (can you say extortion)? Show me the gun, and I might show you the money. But don?t count on it. I will just walk away and let you shoot. If it is SCO, they will probably miss anyway. They have been lousy shots so far.

We will never do business with SCO and we will not run any product that requires SCO anything. We so not stand for threats; especially from a vendor. We want to work with someone that is willing to take the extra step to keep my business, not threaten me. What idiot thought they could threaten companies and still keep their business is plain insane.

In my opinion, SCO has already lost. Their only hope for survival now is to win big over IBM. If they lose, they are doomed. If they win, the money will be a temporary shot in the arm. In any case they will likely lose customers (and investors) hand over fist. I will be shocked if they survive this.
