I would in part agree on the marketing
a number of tech companies don't build an effective marketing strategy to go with their products, hoping for word of mouth or the buzz of a yearly show. I'd doubt in a competitive market that Brand Maker X is talking up the hardware/software solutions that make them run better or differently than Brand Maker Y. It's on IBM, Sun, Oracle, Microsoft to toot their own horns, and MS will bury you in Conferences, newsletters, magazine ads, targetted tv spots, mini infomercials, and partner tied in adverts. When was the last magazine ad that had, "HP recommends OS/2" Microsoft may make the worst spaghetti but they've sold it well over the years, especially to like minded businesses.
