Before OS/2, the only way to
run Windows 3.1 quickly and reliably was Digital Research DOS. You did have to eliminate the damage caused by the Windows 3.1 installation virus though.
Windows SETUP replaced DRDOS memory manager and disk cache with Microsoft's incompatible files. Yo had to repair your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and then rerun the DRDOS SETUP utility from the DRDOS directory.
