Hardware support
At the time that WinNT 4.0 was first released, OS/2 had better hardware support than NT. It also had lower CPU and memory requirements. I was implementing both systems at the time. MS's ability at that time to coerce hardware OEMs to sell nothing but Windows created the numbers that allowed MS to make Windows appear to be the only alternative to developers. MS manipulated those numbers, as well. Because OS/2 contained a Windows 3.1 subsystem, MS counted every OS/2 sale as a Windows sale in their sales figures. That way, no matter how many OS/2 licenses were sold, it caused Windows licenses to grow by the same amount! No way to ever catch up in that game.
