Aside from customer PCs, IBM mainframes still use OS2 PCs for some configuration/control. Their ESSs use Linux, so maybe mainframes will migrate to Linux eventually, atlthough switching live mainframes from OS2 to Linux will be messy.

Same thing happened to Token Ring - better than Ethernet for large networks, but never got big enough push from IBM.

IBM consistently underestimated the potential of PCs. If they had realized what they had their hands on in the beginning, there would be no Microsoft today.

Their upper managers have lacked a broad vision of computing since Tom Watson Jr. retired.
