I thought Baystar pulled out: I remember reading some time after they put money into SCO that they decided to pull their money out, I think due to bad faith on the part of SCO. I remember reading about the deal. One of the reasons Baystar wanted in was because of the possibility of a major settlement in the lawsuit. They saw it as a money-making opportunity, but it turned sour.

There was an article in Wired a while back that talked about the strategy of McBride and a business partner of his at SCO. I forget the name of the partner, but the article described how he had helped other companies leverage their IP in lawsuits to bring in a revenue stream for technology companies. They reported that some analysts speculated that given this guy's history, he and McBride were probably doing the same thing with the IBM lawsuit. I think someone at SCO all but admitted as well that one of their objectives was to prod IBM into buying SCO (so it seems the speculation that was widely bandied about at the time was real). So they knew how to game the system to bring in money, even though their sales were slack. Not saying I admire the tactic. After having observed this for a while it looks sleazy to me. I see it as a short-term strategy, not one for long term growth.

This is just yet another wild scheme perpetrated by a technology company, one in a string that goes back decades by many companies. I think it goes with the territory.; Posted by: Mark Miller Posted on: 07/16/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
