'Write once, run anywhere' not working for phones

Cell and telcos greed!!!

$0 to $49.95 phones with a 3 year contract are just a bait. No features! We are quickly talked out of the deal!
They want more than just you shirt! $500 for a phone LOCKED to the signal of ONE SERVICE providor. Sprint, Verizon, etc. don't even sell an unlocked unit. 'Unlocked' cell phones are an underground/under-the-counter/e-bay commodity, and cost the same or less than the contract/locked phones.
Pay as you go: $10-20 per month, and you loose the deposit if you don't pump in the required funds each month. My son was mixed up on the 'start' date of his service and lost the $60 initial credit (Rebate!! $110 minus $60 refund to be credited to account) on his account - three day difference; sorry, cell company unable to do anything about it.
And we, the consumer, jump if the lead sheep jumps-BAA BAA.
The cell phone consolidations leave consumers with no competitive alternatives.
