Choose your poison...
ob-tuse:
A)
1. Lacking quickness of perception or intellect.
2. Characterized by a lack of intelligence or sensitivity: an obtuse remark.
3. Not distinctly felt: an obtuse pain.
B)
1. Not sharp, pointed, or acute in form; blunt.
2. Having an obtuse angle: an obtuse triangle.
3. Botany. Having a blunt or rounded tip: an obtuse leaf.

Want to bet that the meaning in "Shawshank Redemption" was A2) and was taken as A1)? Certainly, indicating the warden was lacking in perception or intellect was reason enough to stew in the dark for an eternity at least as that story was conceived.

Personally, though, I was analogizing to B1) I felt dg's point was lacking in point.
