"..It amazes me to what extent ordinary people on the street defend soulless monopolies .."

You should consider getting an MBA or taking classes on business policy. The objective of a firm is usually about maximizing profits and increasing shareholder value. There are businesses like Ben & Jerry's that better suit how you feel business should be run, but a B&J style of business in the technology industry would be a failure. I would you would agree with that. I think Intel and MS has the right model. If they didn't, your next job would be in China.
