I may still be misunderstanding, but when you write...

By that term, I mean my own ability to customise software to my own requirements.

These aren't major changes, they're just things I like, and I like the ability to make those changes.

... I think about Microsoft's intensive effort to provide tools which allow the software to be adapted to circumstances and to increase efficiency of use.


Also worth noting that not very many people and corporations want to work extensively with code. More frequent, it seems, is the replacement of a working system that requires specialized maintenance with one which supposedly can work off the shelf.
Of course, the result of such an effort is usually employment for a number of consultants at a much higgher price, but I'm thinking about attitude rather than results.

If you're accomplishing what would be impossible without access to the code and, perhaps, your skills, then my appreciation. I think that your situation can't be widely generalized, though.
