Forced Upgrades??
Just because MS operates on the wish and a prayer that people upgrade to the latest and greatest OS does NOT mean everyone HAS to upgrade when the latest OS hits the shelves. There's NO ONE forcing anyone to upgrade. No one is going to show up at your house (or office), armed to the teeth and hold your pet hamster (or secretary)hostage until you shell out the money for a Windows upgrade.

In fact, one client I had about 3 years ago had quite a dillema. His one and only computer, a 286 and a 32 MB hard drive, died. He was running DOS 3.3 with WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. Why? Because it did what he needed it to do.

"Everytime they come out with something, the newly released product will be the best thing they ever released, and then sure enough, the next version of that product, when it comes out, will be hyped up the same way."

In the case of Windows 98, it actually WAS their best OS effort to date. It was a LOT more stable than Windows 95. When Microsoft touts their latest OS release as being the "best thing" - that's generally true. About the ONLY exception to this would be the release of Windows ME - that abortion of an OS that survived the coat hanger.

As for Windows 2000 and XP, they are FAR better than Windows 98 in many ways. I've used pretty much every OS release since DOS 4.0 and I think that XP does live up to the hype. Granted, it's not perfect... But there's NO such thing as a "perfect" OS.

Not even Linux (any flavor) is perfect - no matter how much the Linux geeks claim it to be. And before you Linux guys get your ******* in a bunch, answer this: If Linux is so perfect, then WHY are they continuing work on the kernel and the rest of the OS? If it ain't broke...

As for touting new releases as being the best thing ever... I'm sure that Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake and ALL the other Linux houses do the same sort of thing - although, they do it in a more low key fashion. They don't spend mountains of money in advertising, they only spend molehills. The reason behind it is obvious - none of them have the financial resources that Microsoft has at it's accounts. When you got gazillions of dollaras in the bank, you can afford to spend a lot more on advertising.

And besides... Why SHOULDN'T they advertise their latest OS offering? This IS a capitalistic society. Our economy is largely driven by advertising. So what if they advertise and make mountains of money. Big deal. Get over it. Last I checked, becoming a raving success used to be the American dream - anyone can come out of nowhere and make a fortune.

The only ones who seem to think that it's a bad thing are the left wing commie pinkos who have almost convinced everyone that it's "not fair" or somehow wrong to be successful. We hear drivel along the lines of "level playing fields" and "fairness" and so on. Well... Life isn't fair. The playing field is NEVER going to be level. Some people are just better at stuff than everyone else and others will be better at other things. I, with my 300 pound frame, for instance, am not really cut out for say, ballet dancing, but then again, a ballerina may not be able to diagnose and repair a PC either. We all have our strengths and our weaknesses. Bill Gates has the talent of being the mastermind behind a fantastically successful company. He was able to parley a relatively small software company into the empire it is today.
