Why look in so complex matters?
It is enogh to say that you will not be able to buy a new printer.... because drivers would not work on Windows98. They will be designed to architecture of Windows 2000/XP only.

Do you think that someone will keep compatibility of hardware modes back to '90?

As far as companies , they do not wait until hardware breaks. They have to provide continuous service. Reasonable companies will upgrade periodically as to lower costs of operations (suport is more costly than purchase of new equipment after some period). That's why you probably don't drive 25 years old Pontiac (althugh you could probably retrofit it with some newer parts).
