I'll take a shot too
Okay, while stopping support for 98 will probably not force tech savvy persons to upgrade. Sooner or later, a vulnerability or virus or worm will attack the 98 OS. This is possible because of the fact that "that more than 80 percent of these companies were still using Windows 98 and/or Windows 95" (eweek- from AssetMetrix Research Labs) and "27 percent of PCs were running Windows 95 or Windows 98" (same).

Once the support ends; there is a probability that there shall be no more patches for such vulnerabilities. While, the tech savvy people can probably work around it or fix it, large companies and non-techie person shall have to decide to take their chances with a possible crippling virus, which may or may not be patched or upgrade to a new OS; i.e. XP. I suspect most companies will decide to upgrade rather than risk upgrading during an unstoppable virus outbreak.

Once the decision to upgrade is made, the decision to pick hardware is made.
The requirements for windows 98:
Personal computer with a 486DX 66 MHz or faster processor (Pentium central processing unit recommended)
16 megabytes (MB) of memory (24 MB recommended)
One 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive
CD-ROM drive
195 mb of free space (wow that little!)
VGA or higher resolution (16-bit or 24-bit color SVGA recommended)

The requirements for XP:

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space. (whoa!)
Super VGA (800 ? 600) or higher resolution
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

While most computers these days are within the requirements, most persons agree that a computer would run dead slow at 300MHz with windows XP. Most recommend at least a 1.5ghz pc; Thus the upgrading of the computer.

HOWEVER, I do not think that most people worry about upgrading their computers, but rather now feel forced to upgrade the OS, which for some would mean new computers to keep productivity up.

Personally I have one friend who is buying a new computer for just the above reasons.
