I've also interviewed with

MS (while I was getting my Ph.D.) and the interviewer asked me to ... write a piece of code that adds an item to a link list in C.

Since LLs are usually 2nd or even 1st course in computer science, how can they judge the intellectual skills of a candidate by something so elementary. Also, people who have heard that these types of smart-assy Qs are asked could have just memorized the 3 lines of code needed for this type of LL operation. They didn't ask if I had designed or invented something novel or unique.

I asked them what kinds of tasks I would be carrying out at MS, the answer was pretty much massive coding. I declined.

This shows how they go about to select people to work for them. Just smart assy people. Not skilled but they can just deal with tiny code snippets. And this shows in their s/w.
