I worked at Microsoft

Donnie had it right, but for the wrong reasons. Microsoft gets the grade-B people that are only in it for the money, but that's because their work is boring for grade-A folks. Working on the next update to Office isn't sexy.

Microsoft is not re-inventing the wheel on a lot of it's products. Office 2003 isn't that different from Office 2002. Windows 2003 isn't that different from Windows XP. NTFS, FAT, FAT32, etc haven't changed that much in 10-20 years. Considering that everything new has to work with everything old, that limits the amount of innovation you can introduce.

That makes Microsoft slow and methodical to change. So, anyone wanting to make big changes is going to be extremely frustrated. On top of that, you have 58,000 bright coworkers who also want to make big changes. Good luck trying to outshout them.
