Simple: Yes, Cheap NOT!
Could this be a simple, cheap solution with a lot of available tools and applications that installs easily and requires little training and reasonably works well?

For what its worth, MS CRM is NOT cheap. Certainly not cheaper - per seat - than other mainstream tools like it already on the market.

MS CRM requires a server module to the tune of about $1400 plus a per seat license of about $200.

GoldMine, the award winning CRM/SFA package, on the contrary, doesn't require a server unless you're going the enterprise route and only sets you back about $165 for a single user license.

The latest Act! can be had for about $15 bucks IF you happen to look around hard enough.

From Microsoft? Nah. They've never pulled off anything like that before.

Hardly. Most of the tools you find in MS Office - Word, Excel, Powerpoint - they're easy enough to use. The more advanced features take a bit of time to learn, but they don't generally need a computer science degree to figure out. Anyone can sit down at a computer, fire up say, Word, and start typing a letter.
