Serious question.
Where do you get your numbers for linux? Windows and Mac sales are easily tracked because they are sales. But how do you track the use of something that can be gotten mostly free from a myriad of sources? Does every download of an ISO count as a new user? Does every sale of Linux User Magazine with software cd's count as a new user? I really would like to know. And how many of these downloads or magazine cd's wind up never being used? How many of the downloaders gave up in frustration and deleted the OS. I can tell you this, I have dozens of distros from magazines and I even bought two full packages (RedHat 7 and Mandrake 8.1) Never used any of them. Too much trouble to accomplish what I can easily do with Windows. But does the fact that I have them mean that I account for dozens of supposed Linux users?
I really would like to see some proof to back up the statements that Linux is growing and how they have surpassed Apple to become #2.
