NZ, you forget to mention something ...
Windows users who elect not to use compromised Microsoft proprietary applications do not have the option of un-installing htem. So whether or not they run Outlook, they have to patch against Outlook exploits or their machine will be compromised. Whether or not they run IE, they are vulnerable not just to the known exploits in IE< but also the unpatched ones, It isn't just a case of bloat, it's a case of a useless liability that can't be removed. As you will know from having run SuSe Linux, the applications are modules of code which run ON the Linux platform, whereas Microsoft applications are modules of code which have been stirred homogenously into the Operating System in order to preclude the user dumping them for superior, non-Microsoft applications.

"The vulnerability has been found in several versions of Outlook Express, including releases 5.5 and 6.0 for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 machines, according to Microsoft. People don't have to launch the Outlook Express program, however, in order to fall victim to an attack"
