Where'd you advertise for the jobs?
JonDoes says: "We just posted five jobs in our IT department. We
had a total of 84 applicants. Only 6 of them were female, 2 were
black, and 1 of them was hispanic. Of the remaining 75, the
narrow majority were white and the rest were indian."

Did you advertise in-house? Word-of-mouth? Did you advertise
only at colleges with low-minority rates? Did you put ads in
trade papers whose subscriber population is not diverse?

Or, did you advertise in many great colleges, including the small
and historically-minority ones? Did you put word out to
organizations whose membership is mostly minority (i.e.
"women in.../ Blacks in..") or did you not know they exist? Did
you advertise in magazines targeted to minorities and
newspapers in cities with diverse populations? Did you forget
job fairs?

If you did all the above, then congratulations. Maybe it's the past
reputation of your company that deters women and minorities
from applying.
