Actually, I do the IT hiring...
and I would love to hire more women, but there are almost none applying. Seriously.

We just posted five jobs in our IT department. We had a total of 84 applicants. Only 6 of them were female, 2 were black, and 1 of them was hispanic. Of the remaining 75, the narrow majority were white and the rest were indian.

Now, 6 out of 84 is around 7%. It seems to me that women's interest in the IT field has been less than 1 in 10 since I entered the field in 1980. We men have been complaining about that since the dawn of computing. There's no change here; women aren't interested in math, science, engineering and therefore are under-represented ( as compared to their % of society ) in technological careers.

As for who got the jobs, 5 out of 84 is around 5% so we had our pick of the very best qualified. We took the cream right off the top. We got 2 guys who used to work as Cisco network engineers, a couple of guys who had masters degrees, and a field engineer who not only answered all of our questions correctly - he did so on the fly and addressed possibilities we had not thought off. We got 5 literally awe-inspiring people who had been let go elsewhere due to off-shoring.

With such high level competition like this for a handful of mid-tier positions, it seems to me that the real headline should have read "Too Few Americans In Tech".

Regards,
Jon
