Why do we care?
Is there some quality of females that makes women better software developers? Do hispanics use some other form of code when writing their programs? Are blacks intrinsically better at turning software requirements into working systems?

Seriously, what's the benefit?

The only benefit I can see for companies is money. The more possible employees out there, the more companies can drive down wages.
